Experience

The experience of Durham County’s District Attorney, Satana Deberry, may be one of the most important factors in determining the outcome of a case. Deberry prioritizes the prosecution of serious offenses and implements policies to reduce unnecessary pretrial incarceration. She also works to strengthen public trust in the justice system and dismantle systems that restrict the lives of marginalized communities. Before becoming a District Attorney, she worked as a criminal defense attorney in Hamlet, North Carolina, as the General Counsel for the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, and as the executive director of the nonprofit North Carolina Housing Coalition.

Stephens’ experience in the judicial system makes her an ideal candidate for the position. As a former attorney, she has served as a trial court coordinator and in nearly every department of the Durham judicial system. Her background in the judicial system includes serving as Durham’s trial court coordinator, interning in a district attorney’s office, public defender’s office, and clerk. Additionally, she currently serves as a jury commissioner in Durham County and is a member of the Superior Court.

Education

During her term as Durham County District Attorney, Diane Deberry has taken a leadership role in expanding restorative justice in the community. She and her staff are actively engaged in Restorative Justice Circles at North Carolina Central University. These circles bring individuals together to explore the harm that was done and then collaboratively work to make things right. The office refers criminal cases to these groups for restorative justice practices. After the conference, Deberry plans to continue educating community members about this innovative process.

The Durham County District Attorney’s Office focuses its resources on serious crimes while deterring low-level offenses. This approach has been successful in reducing recidivism and improving the community’s overall quality of life. In addition, Deberry’s office has worked with national and local researchers to develop a court-wide training initiative. While these efforts have shown promising results, the office has been criticized for handling recent cases and failing to properly inform victims of reduced sentences.

Issues raised by voters

Whether you’re considering a run for Durham County District Attorney or you’re already a resident, here are some of the issues you should be aware of. The office of the District Attorney is an extremely important one. It’s the chief law enforcement officer for Durham and is responsible for protecting citizens’ rights. However, the role of a district attorney is not only important, it’s also crucial for Durham’s economic and social well-being.

The Durham County DA race was a high-profile primary, but analysis of the vote by race found no significant racial differences. Mike Nifong, the incumbent, received the same percentage of votes from African-American and non-African-American voters. Mike Nifong capitalized on the high-profile case involving a Duke lacrosse player who was raped during the game, which garnered national media attention.
