He is nominated by the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) and is active in other organizations. He also plans to attend law school after graduation. He is also a member of the National Association of Black Accountants.

He co-founded Smith Villazor LLP

Two former federal prosecutors, Patrick and Rodney, have joined forces to create a litigation boutique in New York City. They focus on white-collar criminal defense and regulatory enforcement. Together, they have tried more than 40 cases to verdict. Their combined experience spans more than three decades. They represent clients including high-profile corporate and investment funds in complex civil litigation. In a recent case, they successfully defended a major U.S. financial institution from a bribery charge.

Smith has a background as an assistant U.S. attorney, where he specialized in white-collar criminal defense, securities enforcement, and civil disputes involving the financial services industry. In 2005, he re-entered the legal profession and was hired by the Tinian Dynasty Hotel & Casino in an investigation involving bribery. Patrick Smith co-founded Barrett &Smith PLLC and headed its real estate practice in January 2012. Before his start at the firm, Smith worked for several other Austin law firms, including Drenner LLP, Metcalfe von Kreisler LLP, and H.E.B., as well as the Office of Attorney General of Texas. He also has extensive experience as a state legislator and served as Legislative Aide to a Texas State Representative.
