After a two-week investigation, the Waterloo police department and black hat county attorney cleared a local police officer of any wrongdoing in the shooting of a Black man in April. A report from the Black Hawk County Attorney’s Office said Officer C. J. Nichols was responding to a 911 call about a man armed with a long gun. Officer Nichols observed a weapon on the scene and pulled over the suspect.

This investigation found that the violent crime rate in Waterloo has decreased by 30 percent in the past three years. While violent crimes still require extra attention, the Waterloo police department has taken the “community policing” philosophy to its work. Through SAFE, the Waterloo police department has compiled detailed data to track violent crimes. In addition, the U.S. Attorney’s office is partnering with the Waterloo police department to expand the collaborative efforts that have been developed over the years.

Cripple Creek is a former gold mining town just south of Denver. Cripple Creek’s casinos are located on East Bennett Avenue, the main thoroughfare through downtown.
